Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most scenic and accessible trekking routes, offering a mix of Himalayan grandeur and rich cultural encounters. Located in the north-central region of Nepal, the trail leads you into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin surrounded by a ring of stunning 7,000–8,000 meter peaks.

Reaching ABC at 4,130 meters, trekkers stand face-to-face with some of the world’s most spectacular mountain scenery. The trek is considered moderate in difficulty, making it an ideal choice for those with average fitness levels, even for first-time trekkers. You’ll walk between 4 to 7 hours daily, ascending and descending through varying terrain.

The trail is rich with diverse cultures, primarily of the Gurung and Magar ethnic groups, who are known for their bravery, kindness, and deep-rooted traditions. Teahouses along the way provide authentic local meals and cozy accommodations, giving trekkers a unique insight into daily mountain life.

Detailed Annapurna Base Camp Trek Itinerary

The ABC trek can be customized based on time, route preferences, and fitness level. Below is a popular 8-day itinerary starting and ending in Pokhara, with optional extensions to Poon Hill or additional cultural exploration.

Day 01: Kathmandu to Pokhara (Drive or Flight)

  • Travel 200 km west to Pokhara, the lakeside city and gateway to the Annapurna region.

  • By road: 6–8 hours scenic drive

  • By flight: 25 minutes (optional upgrade)

  • Overnight at hotel near Phewa Lake

Day 02: Drive to Nayapul and Trek to Ghandruk (1,960m)

  • Drive to Nayapul and begin your trek along the Modi Khola river.

  • Pass through terraced fields and forest trails to reach the beautiful Gurung village of Ghandruk.

  • Trekking time: 4–6 hours

  • Overnight at teahouse in Ghandruk

Day 03: Trek to Chhomrong (2,170m)

  • Trek through lush rhododendron forests and traditional villages.

  • Descend to the river and climb to Chhomrong, the last permanent settlement on the way to the sanctuary.

  • Trekking time: 4–5 hours

Day 04: Trek to Himalaya Hotel (2,930m)
