Ceasefire for three months announced by Maoists
September 4, 2005
In what may be a welcome step, the
Communist Party of Nepal (CPN (Maoist) has declared ceasefire for
three months starting the 3rd September, 2005.
Chairman of the CNP (Maoist) Prachanda, declared the unilateral
ceasefire.
In
a press statement on 3rd September, Prachanda said that
the unilateral truce was declared considering the people's
aspiration for peace and democracy.
He
hoped that his party's move would motivate both national and
international forces who want to see peace in Nepal. "This will
encourage them to take new initiative to end the current political
deadlock in Nepal," he said.
He
also expressed the hope that the decision would create conducive
environment for ending the political crisis among political forces
in the county and the United Nations.
“We will not launch any offensive
during the unilateral truce period,” he said in the statement.
Meanwhile, the leaders of the
mainstream political parties have welcomed the Maoists' move. They
said that they have taken the Maoists' decision in a positive
light.
President of the Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala claimed
that the Maoists declared the ceasefire on our appeal so that
conducive atmosphere could be created for talks.
In
a separate press statement, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and
Rastriya Janashakti Party also welcomed the Maoists' declaration.
The parties have urged the government to make efforts for the
establishment of lasting peace in the country.
Similarly, various business related organisations and associations
have appreciated the Maoists' announcement.
Meanwhile, the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (TAAN) has
hailed the ceasefire. The association has hoped that the ceasefire
would help restore peace in the country and gear up the economic
activities, including the tourism industry.
