Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (TAAN) was formed and
registered with the Kathmandu District Administration Office in
1979 at the initiation of some trekking agents. They realized
the need for creating an umbrella organization under which they
could work together to meet their common goals and also assist
the government by providing suggestions to developing the
trekking business into a bigger revenue-generating sector. It
was widely felt that such a body would undertake the major
responsibilities of developing and promoting the country’s
highly potential adventure tourism segment in a sustainable
manner.
Since the very inception of TAAN, the numbers of both the
trekking agencies as well as TAAN members have been on the rise
significantly. TAAN limited its membership only to Nepalese
trekking agents at its initial phase. Nevertheless, it opened
its associate membership to foreign organizations to broaden the
scope of the association.
TAAN members (445 general members, 14
associate members and 39 general members of TAAN Regional
Pokhara Chapter) meet annually to endorse policy guidelines,
which govern the Executive Body. The association frequently
communicates with the concerned bodies of the government to
simplify the procedures and solve the problems related to the
trekking industry. Under TAAN, there are 11 Sub-Committees,
which assist to meet its objectives. Apart from organizing
workshops and seminars to create awareness among the trekking
agents about the rising pollution and other environmental
hazards on trekking routes, the association deals with the
government and other concerned bodies regarding the problems
faced by trekkers and trekking agents. The executive body, which
is elected every two years, includes 6 office bearers, 8
executive members, 1 immediate Past President, 1 representative
from Western Regional Chapter Pokhara and 3 executive members
nominated by the elected executive committee.
