President Dr Ram
Baran Yadav on Jan 12 handed over national flag to 21-time Everest summiteer
Apa Sherpa, who along with his team members, is embarking on The Great Himalaya
Trail- Climate Smart Celebrity Trek (GHT-CSCT).
Apa and his team
members Dawa Steven Sherpa, Saurav Dhakal and Samir Jung Thapa plan to complete
the 1,700 km trek in 120 days.
The team will carry
the national flag throughout the day. The trek will begin from Taplejung in
eastern Nepal on Jan 15 and end in May.
Speaking on the
occasion President Yadav said this trek would help identify the impacts of climate
change in the Himalayas and showcase how sustainable tourism can be used as a
tool for poverty reduction and to build climate-resilience among impoverished
mountain communities in Nepal.
The trek has been organized
to highlight the impacts of climate change in the Himalayas and to promote The
Great Himalaya Trail as the best tourism trail in the world which offers
trekkers to experience extremely rich cultures, breathtaking landscapes and
diverse range of flora and fauna, GHT said in a statement.
“I appeal to the
lovers of Nepal to join me on this once-in-a-lifetime journey to support Nepali
communities that are bearing the brunt of climate change. My effort to walk
from East to West in Nepal is to find places and people that need most
attention and help of the world in their climate battle," Apa said in his
message.
GHT-CSCT is being organized
by Himalayan Climate Initiative in coordination with Government of Nepal, Ministry
