Tourism entrepreneurs have suggested the governing board of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) to bring a capable chief executive officer (CEO) through a fair and transparent process. Speaking at an interaction organized by Journalist Association for Tourism (JAT) Nepal on Oct 20, they urged the private sector representative in the governing board not to work under any pressure and discourage politicization in the board. The term of incumbent CEO Prachanda Man Shrestha is expiring on November-end. NTB’s governing board has formed a three-member committee to select the new CEO. Stating that there was no flaw in the model of NTB, former tourism secretary Dipendra Purush Dhakal said private sector has to be blamed if NTB’s work is not effective. “Private sector is in the majority in governing board. The government can’t impose its decision if private sector representatives in the board do not support it,” he added. Mohan Lamsal, general secretary of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), suggested nominating representatives of travel trade association to ensure fair representation of the private sector in the governing board. “This would help end politicization in the selection of board members,” he added. Most of the participants in the interaction suggested that it was high time the government reviewed the structure of the governing board to make representation of private sector in the governing board more effective.
