A delegation of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) participated in the Seoul Lantern Festival held in South Korea in the second week of May.Prior to the event, Eternal Peace Flame from Lumbini – the birthplace of Lord Buddha – was taken to South Korea. Sherpa wins TAAN running c’ship

Fu Dorjee Sherpa of Adventure International Treks won the men’s event of TAAN Trekking Workers’ Running Championship 2013 held in Nagarjun forest on May 25.Sherpa completed the 14-km race in 57 minutes and 13 seconds to finish ahead of Shiva Bikram Adhikari and Dhan Bahadur Tamang. Property worth millions of rupees was destroyed in a fire that broke out in tourist hub of Thamel at around 10 pm on May 16. Rana Bahadur Khadka, first vice president of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), has been bereaved of his mother. Rudramati Khadka, 66, passed away while undergoing treatment on May 16.She was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat on May 17. Office-bearers and members of TAAN executive committee, former office-bearers of TAAN, staffers of TAAN and tourism entrepreneurs, among others were present on the occasion.TAAN expresses its heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family and prays for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

5th National Tourism Fair concludes

The 5th National Tourism Fair concluded at Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall on May 12.   Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has been organizing the fair every year to promote domestic tourism and disseminate information regarding Nepali tourism industry to general public. Tourist arrivals down 9% in April

Tourist arrivals via air in the month of April dropped 8.9 percent to 54,119 in April compared to the figures of the same period last year.This is the third drop in arrivals in four months of 2013.The statistics released by the Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport arrivals from India nosedived by 25.3 percent in April. Twenty-nine expedition teams (as of April 19) from different countries are attempting Mt Everest (8848m) -- the tallest peak on earth -- this spring.According to Tourism Industry Division under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, 315 foreign mountaineers have received permission to climb Mt Everest.Last year, the government had permitted 335 foreign mountaineers of 30 teams. Tourist arrivals drop 2% in March

Massive drop in the number of tourists from South Asia (-33.8 percent), pulled total tourists arrivals via air down by 2.12 percent in March compared to the figures of the same month last year. Statistics compiled by Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport and disseminated by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) showed total arrivals during the month reached 64,442 down from 63,779 recorded in March 2012. Arrivals from India, the largest tourism market for Nepal, went down by 37.3 percent to 10,183. This is the fourth straight month that arrivals from India have declined. A team of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) is leaving for Nepalgunj on April 2 to explore new trekking routes in Humla district. The seven-member team led by Rana Bahadur Khadka, 1st vice president of TAAN, includes videographer, report writer, photographer and cartographer. A four-day ‘Basic Trekking Guide Training’ organized by Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) concluded on March 16.TAAN organized the training as a refresher course for working trekking guides. Tourist arrivals to Nepal via air increased by 6 percent in February compared to arrival figures of the same month last year.According to figures released by Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a total of 45,123 foreign tourists entered the country through aerial route. Arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia) recorded healthy growth of 46 percent, thanks to robust growth in arrivals from China (135 percent), Malaysia (288.1 percent) and Singapore (111.9 percent), respectively. Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has signed a cooperation agreement with Travelife to introduce the Dutch firm’s sustainability system among TAAN members. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) has identified alternative trekking trails in the famous Annapurna Region.
