National Tourism Fair postponed
April 29 , 2014
The 6th National Tourism Fair, scheduled to begin in Kathmandu from May 2, has been postponed.
A joint meeting of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Joint Tourism Coordination Committee (JTCC) held on Monday decided to postpone the fair until further notice.
The fair was postponed after JTCC, a forum of 20 travel trade associations, made it clear that it would boycott the fair, unless its demands were addressed.
JTCC has claimed that NTB was organizing the fair without consulting with the private sector.
JTCC had submitted a four-point memorandum to MoCTCA on April 22. In the memorandum, JTCC had urged the ministry to postpone the fair and appoint board members from private sector in NTB on recommendations of travel trade associations, among others.
Saying that one of the candidates of CEO is assuming the role of chief executive at NTB and that it was creating legal problem in the appointment process of new CEO, JTCC has demanded that the government remove the candidate from the executive responsibility to pave the way for early appointment of new CEO.
In the meeting, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Bhim Acharya assured officials of JTCC that the ministry would soon call a meeting to hold discussion on its other demands, a press statement issued by JTCC said.
